About the event
The origins of the Esala Perahera date back to the 3rd century BCE, associated initially with rituals to invoke rain. The Dalada Perahera, celebrating the arrival of the Buddha’s Sacred Tooth Relic in Sri Lanka during the 4th century CE, later merged with the Esala festival. The combined event has been held annually since then, evolving significantly over the centuries.
Today’s Perahera retains much of its historical significance and grandeur. The festival begins with the “Kap Situveema” ritual, where a sanctified young jackfruit tree is planted at each of the four Devales dedicated to the guardian gods: Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama, and Pattini. Following this, the Kumbal Perahera runs for five nights, featuring processions from these Devales converging at the Temple of the Tooth. Here are stats for Last year's festival
